tear ducks

Everytime Aves feels indignant, she is able to bring on the tears and waterworks. Now, we’re not talking crocodile tears here, we’re talking big, fat, beautiful tears. I’m quite surprised. Usually, when a kid feels wronged or just plain doesn’t like what’s being said, they can’t just cry on demand. They will try to cry, but it will come out as whining with crocodile tears. I would say that Aves is an on-demand crier.

The other night at dinner, Aves was doing something that got her scolded (can’t remember exactly what it was but it can range from playing with her food/drink, hopping up and down from her chair, fighting with Josh about something, …). Anyway, when I told her to stop doing what she was doing and she didn’t want to, she started crying. Big. Fat. Beautiful tears. Brian and I just looked at each other with a ‘how does she do that?!” look on our faces. Josh, in his own way, was able to verbalize his curiosity:

J: Mommy, where do tears come from?
Y: They come from your eyes.
J: No, but where do they come from in your eyes?
Y: They come from something called tear ducts. The tear ducts are in your eyes.
J: (after pausing for thought): Do the tear ducks go “quack, quack’?

Ha ha, too cute! Ethan can do the same thing. He can even make himself go into the hyperventilating, big fat tears cry.

Ha! We have to make sure there is no Aves-Ethan collusion on the "best" way to cry!
